Organic basket #11

Jalepenos_onions_garlicNo group picture (again) this week.. it’s been busy. As you can see, I got some JalapeƱo peppers, garlic bulbs and onions. The peppers were, as my CSA calls it, in bulk so partners can take as much as they want, in reasonable quantities. I walked away with way more onions than pictured. I figure it amounts to about two small paper bags full, but onions keep and they’re a good fridge staple. Other basket goodies included: Japanese eggplant, cabbage, lettuce, water melon and tomatoes.

This has been out for awhile now, so I’m a bit late. I don’t like that it’s from the makers of fatty, high-cholesterol mayo. But the message is spot on and well explained. I actually signed up to get a free pair of gardening gloves and a packet of carrot seeds from Hellmann’s in May. (Actually, I just wanted the gloves). I didn’t pay much attention as to why they were doing the freebie at the time, but in retrospect it probably had something to do with this video. Go figure. The whole marketing campaign is dissected over at Are you gonna eat that?.

Here in Quebec, it’s easy to buy local. A place like Loblaws clearly marks produce that has been grown in this province. At harvest time, you’ll see a barrage of signage on our pears, apples, squash and many others fresh goodies. But if you can’t support a local organic farm directly by becoming a partner, the next best thing would be to buy as much local produce as possible from the grocery store. It’ll certainly be fresher than that nectarine that traveled all the way from California, or that head of lettuce that came from who-knows-where?

I’ve been looking for a clothing swap of this calibre for a long time. I have stacks of old streetwear that I stopped wearing. They were too nice (and expensive) to just give away, and selling them online was more work than I was willing to put in. Only a few days to go and I’m not done sifting through the rest of my wardrobe… see you there!
