DIY art in reclaimed framesMy mom gave me some framed awards from her office almost a decade ago. If I remember correctly, they were just going to throw them away. So they were free… FREE! Now, several apartment moves later, I’m finally doing something with em. I’ve been seeing a lot of typographic art around lately and figured I could make my own. Why pay for it?

I played around with the fonts in Illustrator til I found something I liked. I set it all up to print on an 11×17″ paper and moved onto the frames. I deftly removed the business award and matting then eye-balled the placement of my prints in the frame.

How’s that for essentially free art? My favourite is the ampersand.

I can be found at my desk humming bars of this song. Not too loud to disturb my fellow cubicle-dwellers, but probably enough to make them think I’m a bit nuts. But it’s a beautiful song and I can’t help it.

Ever away from seeing more than life
The morning lies miles away from the night
No man ever could steal her heart
But with bright gold coins I’ll take my shot

And all it takes to fall
If you don’t walk, might as well crawl

(music)

All it takes to fall
What a quiet world after all
Of the things that you guessed will come
What a moment it was after all

Why did I only just hear about this musical on The Colbert Report last night?!

If you’re not familiar with this guy, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was a Nigerian political activist and revolutionary musician who created Afrobeat. His music is both uplifting and speaks volumes, as I discovered years ago.

I really hope that this show is a success so it may one day come to Montreal. I don’t foresee a trip to NYC in the near future, but it’d be really neat to see this. This, from a person who’s never wanted to see a musical before.

Having just discovered It’s always sunny in Philadelphia, I’ve blazed through 4 seasons, and am all caught up to date, in the span of about 2 weeks. It’s that good.

How to describe it? I’d say it’s younger, wackier and harsher Curb/Seinfeld. My favourite character is Charlie Kelly… check him out. He’s the bestest. Ever. Don’t you think his voice is eerily similar to Aasif Mandvi’s of The Daily Show?

Lazy weekday dinner

Potato & onion pierogies with Yves Bavarian sausageThis is a dinner staple; good for after soul-sucking days at the office. Admittedly, I should eat a salad with it but most time I don’t.

I’ve got a decent, cheap, vegan potato & onion pierogi source; the yellow No Name brand at Loblaws. At $2.50 for a package of 30, what’s not to like? Cooking them up is just a simple boiling-water operation. Fry up a bit of onion, and (moderately pricey) Yves Bavarian sausages and you’re good to go. I like to dab just a bit of Earth Balance on all of it with a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
