So, you may have heard about the Vida Vegan convention, happening at Portland State University this August. This event is completely sold out and there’ve already been a couple of contests to win tickets. Today is the last day to enter Vegtastic Voyage’s No-Talent Vida Vegan Con Contest, for which I made this portrait out of royal icing:

I followed the ingenious painting technique found over at Eye Candy. However, instead of chocolate, I used the royal icing recipe from Vegan with a Vengeance, but tweaked it to twenty-second rule specifications so I wouldn’t end up with a pool of goop. Even though it was more than workable, I think sticking to chocolate would have been better.
Oh well, next time.
Also, I thought painting on wax paper would make it easier to peel off once everything was set and dry, and it did, but it buckled from the humidity. If I ever try this again I’ll use parchment.
I hope I win the contest, but it’s a bit nerve-racking to think I might take an adventure on my own to the west coast (I’ve never been before!). I’m sure I’ll be fine, I think I’m just used to going in the opposite direction, over the Atlantic.
Check out my original entry; royal icing on shortbread. After seeing the other contest entries, I decided to up the ante. Wish me luck!
Wow. Great results! Good luck on your contest.
Thanks! It’s definitely not perfect, but I personally think it was a good first try.
Hope you win because that looks amazing! :-)
Thanks a bunch! There are actually midtones but I didn’t fully read the instructions (again) and didn’t dry between shades. If I had vegan white chocolate I so would’ve done the portrait in that!
That is really cool!
I’d love to go to that conference. It’s in Portland, isn’t it? I’ve never been there. It sounds like a very vegan-friendly place.
Thank you! But, bad news, I didn’t win.
Yes, it’s in Portland and they have food trucks there, street food!!! It would have been nice to attend a meeting where, for once, I wouldn’t need to worry about what to eat and be on the same wave length as most others around me.
Not sure about you, but as soon as I know I’m travelling somewhere I check what amenities my hotel has (microwaves are so convenient) then check for restaurants and natural food stores in the area. With me, it’s all about the food logistics.
Hopefully the next Vida Vegan Con will be on the East coast (cheaper). This one would have been a huge last minute gift to myself.
Hey MeanSoyBean,
Good game! I’m sorry you didn’t make the cut. I really liked your piece, and was fairly sure you would win. So sure in fact, that I was preparing myself for the next contest! I hope you try again and enter Janessa’s contest.
It stinks to lose–boy how I know that. To keep myself motivated, I remind myself that enjoying the process is key to sanity, and that I must always stay on top of my writing. Blogging is my passion, it’s my “me” time, and my current media to express myself artistically.
No matter what, you’re still a vegan blogger and no one can take that away from you. I hope you can get in. Keep blogging, and perhaps we will meet in the future.
